Tips for / with teenagers from age 12

Individual
Encourage your child to listen to their favorite Dutch-language music. Turn on the radio or play a Dutch-language playlist.
Look together for Dutch podcasts.
Motivate your child to watch Dutch-language TV programs, series, films, vlogs, online videos, or the news.
Encourage your child to read in Dutch: books, comics, newspapers… At the library, you can find Young Adult books or check out InstaBook.
Install apps to learn or practice Dutch on your child’s smartphone. Visit www.nederlandsoefenen.be.
Is your child just starting to learn Dutch? Find learning materials at the Taalpunt in the library.

With the family
Watch Dutch-language TV shows, films, and series together. Turn on Dutch subtitles. Watch the dubbed versions in Dutch.
Do an activity together (film, theatre, concert, sports…) in Dutch. Check the cultural center’s program or visit www.uitinvlaanderen.be.
Talk a lot with your child. Encourage dialogue between your child and family members. Through this interaction, your child comes into contact with the language.

With friends
Enroll your child in a camp, course, or workshop in Dutch.
Have your child join a Dutch-speaking sports club or youth organization. Follow their interests: sports, music, gaming, theatre, adventure, Chiro, scouts…
Encourage your child to go to the community or youth center.
Look for a holiday job in Dutch with your child – for example, as a playground animator (from age 15) or at a sports camp.
Give your child time to have fun. Children learn a lot of Dutch from each other.
